Need we say anything more? Barbie shaped generations as a doll – and is now redefining zeitgeist and pop culture once again in the form of a film! Greta Gerwig may not have received an Oscar nomination for her direction, but cinema-goers around the world fell at her feet. Her very own, bold interpretation of the Barbie myth was the cinema hit par excellence. Because, in addition to its brightly coloured interiors, heartbreaking songs and scurrility, it is also cleverly constructed throughout – and also quite evil (at least if you ask Ken). The wonderfully absurd, feminist pamphlet in pink is tender, funny, sad and always gives hope – in terms of the fight for equality for women in society, culture and film!

Of course, one evening after Skip Marley’s live performance, we will be playing Bob Marley’s fantastic musical biography on the big screen (which Skip also contributed to musically) as a kind of double homage and furious encore. And both countries not only provide us with impressive images and intense encounters, but also form the backdrop for one of the strongest German films of recent times.

With outstanding performances by Karoline Herfurth and Tom Schilling, the film evokes something very special: a reflection on one’s own living conditions, relationships, time – above all, leisure time! Wim Wenders guides us through Japan and accompanies Hyrayama, who cleans public toilets in Tokyo every day with unwavering calm, meticulousness and composure. He seems content with his simple, secluded life and devotes himself to his passions for music and literature away from the structured daily routine. “Perfect Days” is a deeply moving, poetic reflection on the beauty of the everyday, on light, shadows, trees and movement. The lead role is embodied by Kōji Yakusho in such an engaging way that you just want to watch him go through his routines forever. This meditation in slowness is also a nod to musicians such as The Animals, Patti Smith and, of course, Lou Reed, whose song “Perfect Day” gives the film its title. A perfect film!
